About Self Development Academy
Self Development Academy (SDA) is a publicly funded, K-8 accelerated Mesa elementary and junior high charter school that has received Arizona’s “excelling” school ranking for six consecutive years. Teaching one grade level above Arizona standards, Self Development Academy is one of the top performing schools in Arizona and is also a leader when it comes to the amount of material students learn in a year.
Although there is no tuition cost to students, Self Development Academy charter school rivals top private schools in the country for its quality of education. The unique approach to education recognizes students’ individual learning styles and challenges them to reach their potential.
Self Development Academy complies with all state enrollment requirements, which means students enroll based on a first-come, first-served basis. Preference is given to students with siblings already enrolled in the program. SDA does not discriminate against race, gender, ethnicity, religion, language proficiency or disability. SDA is a child-centered schoolthat challenges students to reach their potential. The school provides a unique and nurturing environment, including enrichment programs for the talented and intellectually curious students, a challenging curriculum, and dedicated teachers. Students are challenged and encouraged to succeed as they develop a sense of pride, respect for themselves and others, and acceptance of all students.
Our school's mission is to strive for excellence in education by helping develop lifelong learners. SDA is built on a clear vision: an emphasis on the basics along with recognition and accommodation of each child's individual strengths and learning style. Our unique approach to education focuses on the increasingly important integration of new, research-based knowledge with traditionally upheld views that have withstood the tests of time. Our program is distinguished because it synthesizes new ideas and concepts with those that have worked well in the past.
The founder of Self Development Academy charter school (SDA), Anjum Majeed, first started Self Development Preschool (SDP) in 1988 to provide children with an academically challenging environment supported by an engaging curriculum and dedicated staff. Parents wanted a similarly challenging environment for the children in kindergarten and beyond.
Consequently, SDA was founded by Ms. Majeed in 2000, adjacent to the preschool. Although SDA has grown from its modest beginning of 37 students, the growth process has been deliberate and thoughtful to preserve both academic and fiscal integrity. Today, the Charter School’s population exceeds 300 students. Many students who begin with the preschool continue at SDA through eighth grade, thus providing parents the assurance that their child receives a firm educational foundation.
